My sister told me we were going to celebrate Valentine’s day and my brother in law’s birthday together. A double date. She mentioned that we were going somewhere expensive, where celebrities go all the time and Beyonce has even eaten there before. If you ask me what the restaurant is called at this very moment, I cannot recall. Anyway, the point is, my sister knows I’m pretty casual. I wear jeans, a nice blouse, some heels and call it a day. But being that Beyonce might show up, I thought it’d be worth finding a new dress. She insisted on me wearing this white jumper I had, but I was not feeling it, so I passed by some stores and found a teal dress in the sales rack. I picked it up and left with it. Obviously I purchased it. I got home and my mom was still not home and I thought it was strange but she was helping my sister doing loads of errands and with the baby. My fiancé was helping his uncle move that weekend so, I was alone the whole day. When I got home from the mall, I went ahead and did my hair. My nails were already done since the week before, I went with the classy French.
It was around 6 p.m., I start doing my makeup and texting my no where to be found fiancé that he should be getting ready soon since I don’t want to be late to our first double date. He arrived to my house and we headed for my sister’s. At some point it did cross my mind that it was strange that my family was so busy and I had nothing to do, no errands to run, no appointments, but I ignored it and enjoyed the day instead. When we arrived to my sister’s, we went inside and everything was spotless. My sister has a 6 month old baby by this time, so I expected to see some wipes or diapers lying around, but didn’t make it a big deal, I thought that’s great she’s been able to pick up, it must not be so easy to do (I know this now). Anyway, my sister told us they were outside, waiting for us and when we went through the back door, oh my lanta! I was nervous and shy and blushing all together! As we went down the steps, my fiancé said, “Hi”, it was our thing. I was in awe to see our families together under this beautiful white tent, with light bulbs all around and beautiful gold and white decor set out on the tables beneath the tent. He held my hand as we walked to the center of both families and they cheered us on. Then, he said out loud to our families, how much I meant to him and that I was the one. He asked if I would marry him and I said, you guessed it, yes! My ring was fixed, it fit perfectly and our families filled us with so much love and I couldn’t believe what the dinner really was. I’m so happy that my sister got me to dress up because the pictures turned out beautifully and my hair and nails were just spot on! By the way, the date was no coincidence (February 08, 2020), 2 + 8 = 10, it’s my number.
The weekend passed and we both worked that very Monday together, everyone was shocked! Our coworkers kept passing by my desk and congratulating me and everyone kept saying congratulations to him and it was crazy! We were totally the talk of the day at work. Our big secret was out and we were ready to move on, but the news didn’t go away for a while after that week.
Nothing changed for us, we were us and it was out and we stayed the same at work, professional and didn’t hang out much during work hours. We left it for after-hours. We felt that it kept us balanced and it did.
Shortly after, the world was hit with a pandemic and we had to postpone our plans. The pandemic changed everything and everybody, including us. We did not expect the two years that followed after March 2020.
